Pennsylvania Budget Deadline Passes with No Final Deal

(July 2, 2026)

Each year, the Pennsylvania state legislature and governor must approve the state budget to keep funds flowing to many programs and services for children and families, including school districts, nonprofit organizations, and counties. Pennsylvania’s constitutional budget deadline was June 30, but unfortunately, for the fifth year in a row, there was no agreement by this date. Last year, there was no final deal on the budget until November. Some funds for essential government functions continue by law even after the budget deadline, but as time passes, services for schools, cities, and vulnerable populations will be at risk.

Although leadership has continued to negotiate behind closed doors, the final agreement will likely be after the Fourth of July holiday. This Monday, the Senate Appropriations Committee amended the House passed version of the bill – which was the same as Governor Shapiro’s proposed budget from earlier this year. This Senate version of the budget bill gutted the House version, and only included a single item of about $24 million.

Allies for Children continues to urge leaders to prioritize funding for vulnerable children and their families. Stay informed on PA’s budget by following our blog, social media, and signing up for our newsletter.
