Mar 05 Executive Actions Continue to Impact Schools and Students
(March 5, 2025)
Throughout February, the Trump Administration has been pushing to “dismantle” the Department of Education. Through a series of Executive Orders, the administration has been targeting “diversity, equity, and inclusion” practices.
Building on an executive order that was sent in late January and a “Dear Colleague” letter that was sent to districts in February, the administration has opened the EndDEI.ed.gov portal where individuals can report DEI activities in schools. The website states:
“The U.S. Department of Education is committed to ensuring all students have access to meaningful learning free of divisive ideologies and indoctrination. This submission form is an outlet for students, parents, teachers, and the broader community to report illegal discriminatory practices at institutions of learning. The Department of Education will utilize community submissions to identify potential areas for investigation.”
It is unclear what an “investigation” will look like and how this will be handled.
This “portal” arrives at a time when the administration has closed a number of programs in an effort to show that they are reducing spending in the Dept. of Education. Programs eliminated or reduced have included research programs funded under the Institute of Sciences, including those related to STEM and CTE research and teacher preparation programs. The Department’s press releases offer a dark view into their policy decisions which are impacting schools, students, and families – particularly students in the LGBTQ+ populations.
